Explore Engineering 2015 UPDATE:

More than 250 people attended Explore Engineering 2015 on Jan. 29! There was great representation from around Douglas County: Camas Valley and Geneva Academy brought buses of students. Multiple age groups from middle to high school were there and spoke with representatives from Douglas County businesses and agencies, like Knife River, Convey, Roseburg Forest Products, Lone Rock Timber, U.S. Air Force, BLM, U.S. Forest Service, American Association of University Women, and professional surveyors from the area. College department staff from OIT, OSU Forestry and UCC were also present.

The presenters from employers to professional organizations and colleges shared stories about planning for education and how students could make their educational journey into a career. Students also built windmills and competed for prizes. Everyone enjoyed the food and we had many positive remarks about the great event and good food.

An article about the event with quotes from our DCPSS staff appeared in Sunday’s News-Review available HERE online, but you may need an online subscription to read the article.

Explore Engineering 2015 is Jan. 29

Teachers, counselors and business leaders join students and parents Thursday, Jan. 29, at Explore Engineering 2015 to share information about careers and Umpqua Community College’s programs in engineering, surveying, computing and computer science.

The eighth annual event takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Danny Lang Teaching, Learning and Event Center at UCC, 1140 Umpqua College Road, Winchester. The gathering has been expanded this year to include middle school as well as high school students, families and staff. Participants can meet with people who work in these fields to learn about their careers and work experience. Admissions representatives from Oregon State University and Oregon Institute of Technology also will attend. A free dinner will be served, followed by program presentations and a scholarship raffle.

Engineering 2015 is co-sponsored by UCC and the Umpqua Valley STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) Hub, which is a project of Douglas County Partnership for Student Success (DCPSS). The event is one of the first two events the Umpqua Valley STEAM Hub is supporting with its mini-grant dollars.

“The Steam Hub is excited to support student participation from all across Douglas County in what is one of its inaugural projects to connect and engage youth in science, technology, engineering, arts and math learning experiences with a connection to building plans for future careers,” said Gwen Soderberg-Chase, DCPSS project coordinator.

DCPSS is a group of community leaders invested in developing successful connections for all kids from cradle to career for parents, educators and students.
