STEAM Extravaganza blossoms in May

Winter has its place, but it’s not too soon to start thinking about spring – especially when the first-ever STEAM Extravaganza is set to take place in May!

Anybody who is involved in the world of STEAM, or who wants to be, is invited to join the planning stages of this celebration at Umpqua Community College. We’ll be announcing the date on the DCPSS website, Facebook page and through other channels, so stay tuned.

What is the STEAM Extravaganza? We’re thinking of it as a gathering to showcase activities and connections Douglas County folks are making in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, with artful innovation tying it all together. It will be a family-fun day highlighting efforts and projects of schools, clubs, nonprofit groups, businesses and other organizations. We also expect to provide tours of UCC sites involved in STEAM education, and to provide information on numerous UCC STEAM-related courses that lead directly to dynamic jobs.

Part of the Umpqua Valley STEAM Hub’s mission is to build on an existing STEAM foundation that can revitalize our community, educationally as well as economically. “Not everybody realizes that we have a STEAM identity for Douglas County, and we’re looking to expand it,” said STEAM Hub Project Coordinator Grace Goodson. “There is a lot of cool stuff going on; we want to make sure everybody knows it.”

What can you do? We’re seeking sponsors as well as those willing to help plan and organize the day’s events. Whether you’d like to make a contribution, provide an activity for kids and families or just come hang out with your robot – we’d love to have you on board.

Please contact Grace Goodson with your ideas, questions or suggestions. She can be reached at umpquatvalleysteamhub@gmail.com.
