UCC hosts Explore Engineering 2016

If past attendance is any indication, it’s time again for one of the most noteworthy nights of the year for STEAM-leaning students and their parents.

Umpqua Community College will host high school and middle school students and their families on Feb. 11 for a free dinner and an array of presentations about UCC programs leading to good jobs with secure futures. Explore Engineering, Surveying, Forestry, Computing and Computer Science is a mouthful, but the event name demonstrates the multi-dimensional nature of the evening. It’s set to take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Danny Lang Teaching, Learning and Event Center at UCC, 1140 Umpqua College Road, Roseburg.

Organizers said last year’s gathering drew 300 people. Besides students and parents, there will be counselors, instructors, business leaders, industry exhibitors and anyone interested in any or all of the subjects.

The forestry component is a new addition this year and provides information about a vital program UCC is pleased to make available. DCPSS and the Umpqua Valley STEAM Hub support the organization of the event. Explore Engineering is a great example of how DCPSS partners fulfill its mission — in this case, helping youth leave high school ready for a post-secondary education and/or career.

These UCC programs are a great bridge to new career paths, whether it’s for students just out of high school or those making a switch from other jobs. Check out these video links to meet three former UCC students who have impressed employers and changed their lives:

Students attending Explore Engineering 2016 may also connect with admissions representatives from Oregon State University and the Oregon Institute of Technology.
