Free summer camps give students hands-on career training

Woodworking, welding, drafting, engineering, job-shadowing a health care professional – these are examples of the numerous hands-on activities available at no cost to Douglas County middle and high school students at local schools this summer.

For a second straight year, the Expanding Horizons Summer Camps are being offered through a grant secured by the Umpqua Valley STEAM Hub. The camps, which emphasize Career & Technical Education, are designed to provide information and experience to students interested in exploring various career paths. They are offered in partnership with local CTE programs, Umpqua Training & Employment, Umpqua Community College, Douglas Education Service District, Oregon State University and the Area Health Education of Southwest Oregon.

Registration is open to all students. Camps last a week for middle school students and two weeks for those in high school. All camps are free; lunch is provided. Registration for all camps can be found at www.dcpss.org/expandinghorizons/.

Dates and locations are listed below. For information or to request a registration form, call 541-784-8622 or send email to umpquavalleysteamhub@gmail.com.
