Free College and Career Workshop planned for MLK Day

Douglas County high school and college students are invited to turn Martin Luther King Jr. Day into a chance to prepare for their futures at a free College and Career Planning Workshop.

In celebration of community engagement on MLK Day, the AmeriCorps members of Douglas County Partners for Student Success (DCPSS) and Phoenix School of Roseburg are partnering to throw this student-driven event. The workshop, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Boys & Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley in Roseburg, will be an “open house” event.

Students should feel free to come and go at their leisure and bring any questions they have. There will be free coffee, tea, and water. Free pizza will also be served for lunch at noon while Jessica Richardson, Umpqua Community College recruiting coordinator and enrollment advisor, presents on the financial aid process.

Topics that will be addressed include preparing for college; applying for financial aid and scholarships; how to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); how to complete the Office of Student Access and Completion scholarship application; and much more. There will be computers on hand for use, but students are also encouraged to bring their laptops.

Volunteers will be available to provide assistance with the FAFSA, OSAC scholarship application, Oregon Promise application, college applications, and college/career exploration. Parents are also encouraged to stay and learn about the financial aid process. Students who would like assistance filling out scholarship applications such as the FAFSA will need to know their Social Security number and their parent(s)’ tax information.

Those who would like to attend can register at https://tinyurl.com/CollegeAndCareerPlanning.

Volunteers are also sought for the event and can register at https://tinyurl.com/CollegeAndCareerPlanning.
